1) Identification
Artist: Rachel Whiteread
Title: embankment
Date: 2005 October
Location: Tate Museum, London. UK

(2) The category
Medium: Architecture

(3) How it can be understood in relation to the tenets of 'Postmodernism' discussed thus far on the course (emphasis on the subject [viewer's experience] rather than [art] object, etc.)
It consists of some 14,000 transluscent, white polyethylene boxes (themselves casts of the inside of cardboard boxes) stacked in various ways; some in very tall mountain-like peaks and others in lower (though still over human height), rectangular, more levelled arrangements. They are fixed in position with adhesive. (from en.wikipedia.org)
Viewers
are active participant to this art project. They can navigate through the landscape defined with the compiled boxes. The experience stimulated by walking around these white cardboard boxes connected people, objects and memory.

(4) What it tells us about the cultural context from which it grew. (Nationality of artist, context within which it is installed, etc.)
Whiteread was born in London. She was trained in painting in Brighton Polytechnic at the Cyprus College of Art, and later studied sculpture at London's Slade School of Art. (from en.wikipedia.org). The most famous work she did is the ‘Ghost’ in 1990 and ‘House’ in 1993. She consistently explore her art with architectural vocabulary. Her art work include Snow Show (2004) with Fininish Architect Jhhani Pallasmaa and Unittiled Monument 2001.
